To avoid ankle swelling on long car trips or even at work, if you have a sit-down job, you should simply stand up or go for small walks.
You can also try to excersise your feet and ankles while sitting down if you simply cannot arrange for small walks. This will help the foot and ankle area carry blood back toward the heart.
If you have mild ankle, foot or leg edema caused by vein insufficeincy, you can wear compression stockings or simply elevate your leggs. The same goes for swollen ankle edema during pregnancy.
